Project: Nambour TAFE Project Description: After preparing the original concept design by the Project Services this project was handed over into D&C contract. At this point TVS architects became involved in the design and documentation of one new building and the refurbishment of two other. The new TAFE Building has been designed to respond to the surrounding landscape and reflect the environmental and educational aspirations of SCIT. The design approach has been to carefully relate the building to E Block adjacent. Rather than create a building that will compete for attention, the design allows the strong design elements of existing E Block to act as a landmark. The built form of the new building is of a simple configuration and materials palette. The skillion roof form follows the contour of the land in response to its location. In response to the Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE’s significant commitment to sustainability, The new trades training building Block F accommodates metal fabrication, refrigeration and air-conditioning trades training areas and associated staff and support areas. The area requirements have been developed in close consultation with the user groups during the developed design process. The facility layout is largely open plan to deliver an educationally functional and flexible learning environment. The planning locates the flexible trades work areas, associated learning spaces and service areas on the lower level. Two training rooms and the staff areas, as well as, areas for informal and formal staff and student interaction, are located on the upper level. Good visual connectivity from the upper to the lower level is provided while also ensuring the spaces are acoustically designed and isolated to suit their purpose. The new building is cut into the steeply sloping site and incorporates a sun screen element to provide visual treatment between the retained rock face and the exterior walls. A concealed spoon drain is located at the base of the cut to capture and drain seeping underground water. It is intended the pre-cooled air in this space is to be utilised for ventilation of the building via large industrial louvres opening on to this space. The forms, materials and details of the new building, whilst sympathetic to the existing buildings create a contemporary design that captures the aims and vision of the SCIT. The roof form and design respond to the topography of the site. It is an important element in the design given that it is visible from the higher areas on the site. The design exposes structural elements and services to allow for the building to be a learning school for the trades being accommodated on the site. In particular ESD elements such as PV solar panels and tanks for Rainwater Harvesting are exposed to view in prominent positions.
