Project: Conics Headquarters, Fortitude Valley

Awards: Winner of the DIA ESD Award and UDIA ESD Award in 2002.

Project Description:

The purchase of a 15 year old 3 level office building in Ann Street, Fortitude Valley began with a simple brief to give the building a quick face lift. However this brief was changed to have ESD as a central element once PMM decided that it would make an ideal headquarters for their expanding business. With an eagerness to have as many ESD elements as feasibly possible incorporated into the refurbishment and office fit-out, we took a fresh look at the building and investigated the possibilities.

The main elements of the solution are sun shading devices for the western curtain wall glazing and roof terraces, a ventilated 3 storey high atrium wall, selection of materials from renewable sources and of low embodied energy, materials for the interior with low off-gassing characteristics, rainwater harvesting, waterless urinals and solar power generation. Electrical, mechanical & water savings and reduced energy running costs over the life of the building are the principle outcomes. The new building appearance and finishes have been informed by the ESD approach and have transformed the once tired building into a successful essay in ESD design.
